Review Assignment One
Due Date: 9/8/2017
Subject: Language Arts/Reading

Instructional Grade

Every few weeks, I like to give a review assignment in class.  Our first review assignment will be this Friday (9/8).  Students should use all materials (composition book notes, graded homework) to prepare for this.  On Wednesday, I will give students a preview of the assignment, so they know the topics included and the types of questions that will be asked.  On this first review assignment, students will need to know the definitions of noun and adjective.  Students will also need to have the acronyms R.A.C.E. (for long-answer responses) and P.I.E. (for author's purpose) memorized (these acronyms are in their notes).  There will be sentences where students will need to identify nouns and adjectives that describe them.  There will also be sentences where the student will be given a base adjective and will be required to make it a comparative adjective or superlative adjective, based on the context of the sentence.  Finally, the students will be given a short passage to read with a R.A.C.E. long-answer response question that they will need to answer after reading the passage.

8-14 - 8-18 Independent Reading and Bookmark
Due Date: 8/22/2017
Subject: Language Arts/Reading

Starting this first full week of school, students will be responsible for logging their independent reading on a bookmark reading log.  Students will have the opportunity to check out a novel of choice from my classroom library starting Monday, August 14.  (If a student has not finished the reading of Maniac Magee, the required summer reading novel, they should be reading this now.)  Reading of their independent reading novels is an on-going assignment for my class.  They are required to read a minimum of 20 minutes each weeknight (Monday - Friday), totaling a minimum of 100 minutes (1 hr., 40 minutes per week).  If a student misses reading during a week night, he/she can double up his/her reading another week night or read on the weekend.  This is just a minimum recommendation of reading, and reading more is obviously wonderful!  The reading log gives the student, teacher, and parent a glimpse in to the student's reading life (genre choice, reading stamina, reading location preference, etc.)  The purpose is to grow as a reader and, hopefully, grow a life-long habit and love of reading.  I will be checking these bookmarks periodically for reading conferences, so the bookmark should always come to class with the student's independent reading novel.

This is our first written homework assignment.  This will be handed out Monday, August 14th, and be due Thursday, August 17th.  Students will turn it into their period's assignment slot as soon as they get to class.  Homework that is one day late only receives 80% credit (at the highest before grading).  Homework is not accepted more than one day late.  The only exception would be if a student is absent.  The student handbook states, "Make-up work must be completed within five (5) school days of the absence."
